Monitoring is a fundamental stage of restoration, through which we can evaluate the evolution of this initiative, and thus promote adaptive management of the areas. This work aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using high-resolution satellite images to monitor the evolution of restoration in small areas. We monitored 26 areas, using the MapBiomas BETA Collection, which includes annual maps of land cover and use for the period from 2016 to 2022, with 10 meter resolution. To determine the dynamics of land use, we used the QGIS program. The monitored areas range from 0.03 to 870 hectares and were previously used mainly as pasture areas. We observed an intense dynamic of land use throughout the assessment years (2016 to 2022), much more focused on anthropogenic use than on restoration. The predominant use classes in the areas were: pasture; other non-vegetated areas and forest formation. The sum of pasture areas in 2016 was 937.69 hectares, rising to 649.91 in 2022. The area classified as forest in 2016 went from 1,310 to 1,849 hectares in 2022. Just like the field data, the evaluation carried out using images showed that the evaluated restoration presents ineffective results, considering that the increase in vegetation cover and the consequent reduction of pasture areas in a linear way were not observed. This fact demonstrates the importance of adopting adaptive management strategies that address the specificities of initiatives aimed at restoration. In this way, it is demonstrated that geotechnologies are important tools in the management of areas undergoing restoration, since it is possible to indicate the percentage of area covered by vegetation and classify those that are of interest for restoration nearby, favoring connectivity between fragments.
