Abstract

Agriculture expansion often impacts animal populations negatively, reducing the quality and the amount
of available habitat. They can also result in outbreaks of some species, which can become pests and cause
economic and environmental damage. In order to allow the discussion and implementation of management
policies targeting the population control of such species it is necessary to gather information about the
magnitude of the problem and how humans perceive it. The aim of this study was to survey the conflicts
between farmers and wildlife, and to evaluate their opinion about sport hunting as a management tool.
Data were collected through questionnaires sent by the Viçosa Regional Office of the Empresa de Assistência
Técnica e Extensão Rural de Minas Gerais - EMATER MG - to farmers of 27 counties in the Zona da Mata
region, in southeastern Minas Gerais state. From 60 filled questionnaires received from landowners from 10
counties, 58 reported to have problems with wildlife in their properties. Parakeets, doves, capybaras, and
guans were the most cited taxa as causing problems. Participants in favor of hunting cited 16 taxa that could
be hunted and the majority of these species were also those most cited as causing crop damaging. Despite
the current taboo to discuss even regulated hunting in Brazil, especially among urban citizens, our survey
points out that most landowners are in favor of it. This indicates the need to discuss the implementation of
hunting in the country, especially as a management tool, as well as an economic and recreational alternative
to farmers as allowed by the Brazilian federal act 5.197/1967.
